Our Story
Haitians Abroad was started by a historian that observed that the Haitian presence in the nineteenth-century Atlantic World was limited outside of the Haitian Revolution (1791-1804) and its immediate aftermath. The mission of this database is to rectify this.
Haitian lives abroad were multifaceted. Many had white allies that assisted them in their endeavors, while at the same time, they faced prejudice based on their race and national affiliation. However, no matter where they were, these men and women considered themselves to be Haitian citizens. This is seen in their maintaining their language, culture, and faith, renewing legal citizenship, and sometimes even appealing to their governments to return home. This database introduces Haitian actors not reviewed in previous research endeavors and provides a template for future scholars to examine the transnational experience of Haitians in the long nineteenth century (1791-1880).
