Haitians Abroad Maps

To display the data found on the Digital Database,  the Haitians Abroad team is currently working with Dr. Chris Van de Ven, manager of Sewanee’s Landscape Analysis Lab, and his staff. This map will highlight the ports of entry for Haitians throughout the Atlantic World during the nineteenth century. 

In the meantime, we have split the data across two maps entitled Arrivals and Departures. The arrivals map highlights the ports where Haitians entered the United Kingdom throughout the nineteenth century. The departures map provides the locations that the Haitians entering the United Kingdom came from. This second map gives users a brief, exciting glimpse into how far Haitians moved throughout the Atlantic World during the nineteenth century. Both maps have clickable points for users to interact with individual Haitians at specific ports and a timeline highlighting the increased movement in the later nineteenth century.
